SETUP

Marc and Kate first met in September, 1993, as Freshmen Engineering students at The Cooper Union in New York City. They were in several classes together, including the fabulously geeky EID 101, an introduction to interdisciplinary Engineering that involved a group redesign of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. They worked together on this project, slowly becoming friends.

Kate and her roommate, Stephanie, organized weekly ice cream outings for their friends in the dorm. Stephanie would call Marc for Kate and ask him to come along -- but he usually wouldn't agree unless Kate personally got on the phone and encouraged him to put off his homework for a few hours. One of Marc's earliest memories of Kate involves Kate claiming that New York City geography was far too difficult to navigate, and her suggestion that the numbering scheme of NYC streets was perhaps flawed. Kate had a crush on Marc, and his final EID 101 presentation was the icing on the cake: a video he took of the Navy Yard, which he set to music from The Little Mermaid. He had volume problems with the VCR during the presentation, and the class advisor sat shaking his head in disbelief. Kate was charmed beyond belief.

Kate confided in Stephanie that she found Marc charming and cute, and Marc confided in his roommate Joe that he felt the same way about Kate. In early 1994, they went on their first date, dinner at Yaffa Café. They were soon inseparable. They knew the relationship was meant to be when they realized that Kate's initials (KEM) were a close approximation of Marc's chosen field of study: CHEMical Engineering, and Marc's initials (MCC) were a close approximation of Kate's chosen field of study: MECHanical Engineering.

They spent the next few years at Cooper at each other's side, and moved into 61 East Third Street together (and with Andrew) during the Summer of 1995. The relationship went through some bumps and bruises, and eventually Kate and Marc decided to go their separate ways in late 1996.

BRIDGE

Kate and Marc spent the next few years dating other people, but each was still thinking about the other. They kept in touch, sometimes more religiously than other times, and even tried dating again intermittently.

It took absolute resolve to never get back together again to ultimately bring them to the decision that they belonged together. On July 4th, 2001, Marc and Kate decided to start dating again. They resolved to take things slowly, and to be acutely aware of the status of the relationship, in case things didn't work out. On November 17th, Marc proposed. Kate said yes, and the rest, as they say, is history.
